Practical tips for your move

A well-prepared move takes half the time and a third of the stress. Here’s the advice we give our clients after over a thousand moves in Asturias.

One month before

• Get at least 3 quotes and compare what each includes (packing, insurance, assembly)
• Decide on date and time and book with the chosen company
• If you’re using storage, measure the spaces in your new home to know what fits
• Cancel utilities at the old home: electricity, gas, internet, homeowners’ association

Two weeks before

• Start packing non-essentials: books, decor, off-season clothing
• Label boxes by destination room (not just contents)
• Take a photo inventory of fragile furniture and electronics
• Activate services at the new address (electricity, internet)

The week of the move

• Empty the fridge and freezer 3 days beforehand
• Get rid of hazardous products (gas, open paint) – movers cannot transport them
• Prepare an essentials box to open first at the destination: chargers, sheets, towel, toiletries, a change of clothes
• Reserve parking space for the truck (in Oviedo, Gijón, and Avilés, you request it from the city council)

Moving day

• Be available in person or by phone for questions
• Show the team where each box goes (label + simple floor plan)
• Check the empty truck at the end to avoid leaving anything behind
• Sign the inventory and verify the condition of delicate furniture before they leave

Days after

• Update your address with official agencies: DGT, INSS, bank, healthcare providers
• Keep the delivery note and contract for at least 2 years
• If you discover damage after the move, notify within 24 hours with photos

What not to do

• ❌ Don’t improvise packing on the day – chaos multiplies the time
• ❌ Don’t mix heavy items (books) with fragile ones (dishes)
• ❌ Don’t forget keys, deeds, and documents in a box at the back of the truck – carry them with you
• ❌ Don’t sign off without checking the inventory first
